From $4,000 and a Dream to Atlanta's Top Real Estate Team: Justin Landis's Story

Starting from Scratch: A Chemical Engineer Who Became an Atlanta Real Estate Agent
Justin didn't grow up dreaming of real estate. He came to Atlanta to study chemical engineering at Georgia Tech, quickly realized he didn't want to be an engineer, and graduated with a degree he wasn't sure what to do with. What he did know: he wanted to work for himself.
In 2003, he borrowed $4,000 from his grandmother, bought a house, flipped it, and made a small profit. More importantly, he caught the bug.
Over the next several years, Justin and a few college buddies bought a "We Buy Ugly Houses" franchise and flipped around 150 homes across the Atlanta metro. They were young, leveraged, and riding the market up. Then 2007 hit, and everything changed.
The Crash, the Comeback, and the Mentor Who Changed Everything
When the market turned in 2008, Justin was in serious financial trouble. Heavily leveraged, no job for five years, and a negative net worth. But he had one asset: he'd personally sold nearly 100 houses during the flipping years.
"Maybe somebody else will let me sell their house," he thought.
That's when a mutual connection introduced him to Rich Richardson, who became his mentor and helped Justin learn how to build a relationship-based real estate business from the ground up.
His strategy was simple and brutally effective:
Meet one person face-to-face every single day.
Coffee, lunch, a run, a drink. It didn't matter. Just show up, connect, and make sure real estate came up. No fancy CRM. No paid leads. No ads. Just relationships.
By 2009, while the Atlanta market was still cratering, Justin sold 30 homes. The referral flywheel had started spinning.
Building the Justin Landis Group: Purpose Over Production
As the market recovered, Justin's business exploded. He was working 365 days a year, selling 55+ homes, and about to become a father. Something had to change.
His broker at the time asked him a question that altered the course of his career:
"If you could provide this opportunity for someone and you don't, are you doing everything with what God's given you?"
It was the nudge he needed. Justin launched Justin Landis Group with a mission to serve clients, coworkers, and community above ourselves, and the vision of being Atlanta's trusted source of real estate.
That mission hasn't changed.
The team started small with Jared, Ashton, and Amanda, but grew steadily year after year by attracting agents who were mission-driven and genuinely good at their craft. Justin eventually stepped out of production entirely to focus on leadership and growth.
One of JLG's proudest stats: 38 agents have hit $100,000 in gross commission income for the first time while on the team.
The 90-in-90 Campaign That Raised $270,000
As JLG grew, Justin started thinking bigger about impact. The team launched a bold campaign: help 90 buyers go under contract in 90 days and raise $90,000 for the Atlanta Mission to fight homelessness.
Transaction partners including lenders, attorneys, inspectors, and movers all donated. On day 90, at 4:09 PM, they got their 90th contract signed.
They raised over $90,000. The Atlanta Mission used the story to challenge their donors to match it. The final total: $270,000 raised.
That campaign cemented a core belief at JLG: purpose-based business is good business.
Bolst: Atlanta's First Purpose-Driven Real Estate Brokerage
By 2021, Justin had a bigger vision: what if there was a real estate brokerage whose entire reason for existing was to do good?
He'd been inspired by brands like Patagonia, Chick-fil-A, Bombas, and Toms, where social impact wasn't a marketing afterthought but the whole point. He didn't see that in real estate. So he built it.
In the fall of 2021, Justin and four co-founders launched Bolst, a Georgia Benefit Corporation with a public benefit mission baked into its legal structure: to fight homelessness, increase affordable housing, and expand homeownership in underserved communities.
It wasn't easy. The first year and a half was a grind. Their value proposition was essentially "it's going to be great, just not yet." But they kept building, kept improving, and kept listening to the agents who took a chance on them early.
Then agents started telling their friends. Growth became organic. Today, Bolst has 300+ agents, two Atlanta offices (downtown near Ponce City Market and in Alpharetta), and in 2025:

Hit $1 billion in sales for the first time

Became the only real estate brokerage in Georgia to earn B Corp certification
That certification holds Bolst to the standard it set out to meet from day one.
